Artists
Henry Bauer, DMA, is the director of music at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane, where he conducts the Schola Cantorum, Cathedral Choir, and Diocesan Choir as well as being artistic director of the Sacred Music Series. He has served as director of music and liturgy in parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington. He holds a doctorate in sacred music and choral conducting along with a masters degree in liturgical music and organ from The Catholic University of America. His doctoral dissertation is on choral literature for the liturgical year. Dr. Bauer has held several leadership positions for National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
Dr. Bauer is the current chair of the Director of Music Ministries Forum, was a member of the board of the Director of Music Ministries Division, and chair of the Partner Certification Review Committee for Ecclesial Lay Ministry. He continues to coordinate the Choral Anthem Project and leads choral music reading sessions. He has presented workshops for cantors and organists, lectures on the role of music and musicians in the liturgy, and choral rehearsal techniques. He has served as a Core Committee member for two national conventions and been chapter director and treasurer for the AGO Washington DC chapter. He has led several European choir tours. Dr. Bauer serves on the Board of Officers for the AGO Spokane chapter in areas of program and professional concerns.
Floyd Czoski holds both bachelor of music and master of music degrees in organ from Roosevelt University, Chicago. Before coming to Spokane in 1994 with his wife, Kathleen and two children, Josh and Anna, Czoski was a church musician in the Chicago area for 24 years.
As a Spokane resident, Czoski has served as a church musician in several congregations including Messiah Lutheran, Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Saint Francis Xavier, and Beautiful Savior Lutheran church.
Mark Haberman, a Minnesota native, has resided in Kootenai County for 30 years, relocating from Iowa after nearly 20 years there. He holds a bachelor of music education degree from Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa, and a masters degree in organ performance from University of Minnesota. Theological studies were completed at Perkins School of Theology (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. Rev. Haberman is an ordained United Methodist deacon.
Rev. Haberman has been a church musician for nearly 50 years. He served on the music and program staff of Community United Methodist Church, Coeur d’Alene, for 20 years. This was preceded by 15 years service on the music and program staff of Grace United Methodist Church, Sioux City, Iowa. He currently serves as organist at Trinity Lutheran Church, Coeur d’Alene.
His 22-year social services career included 16 years at Community Action Partnership, Coeur d’Alene. In May 2022, Rev. Haberman retired from Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, Spokane, where he served as planning and resource director. Rev. Haberman serves on the Board of Officers for the AGO Spokane chapter as treasurer and in areas of program and nominating.
Edward Hurd holds a bachelor of music education degree from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, where he spent four years as organist and assistant music director at First Presbyterian Church. He served as director of music ministries for Opportunity Presbyterian Church, Spokane Valley. He was full-time director of music ministries (organist/choirmaster) for First Presbyterian Church, Mesa, Ariz., while completing his graduate studies in choral conducting at Arizona State University. For ten years, he served as associate director of music and organist for All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Phoenix.
In Nebraska, Hurd served as director of traditional worship (organist/choirmaster) for the 2,500-member congregation of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, La Vista, for nine years. He was artistic director for the 200-voice community chorus, Voices of Omaha, for eight years. He was performance rentals director for Omaha Performing Arts which operates the Orpheum Theater and renowned Holland Performing Arts Center, joining the organization as general manager in 2003.
Since returning to Spokane, Hurd joined the staff of Central Lutheran Church in 2018. He is a busy substitute music teacher for Spokane Public Schools and maintains a private piano and voice studio. Hurd is a frequent adjudicator for area contests. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education and American Choral Directors Association. Hurd serves on the Board of Officers for the AGO Spokane chapter as Dean.
Joseph Schubert, PhD, retired from teaching in 2020, after 36 years of teaching choral music in public schools at the junior high, senior high, and university levels. From 2009 through 2023, Dr. Schubert also taught music theory, choral literature, and academic research and writing in the Three-Summer Master of Music in Choral Conducting program at California State University, Los Angeles.
Dr. Schubert’s dissertation dealt with twentieth-century French organist Jean-Jacques Grünewald, providing an extensive biography and a comprehensive analysis of Grünewald’s solo organ works in the context of the twentieth-century French organ school. He has been a church organist since he was 18 years old and currently serves as organist at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, Spokane. Dr. Schubert serves on the Board of Officers for the AGO Spokane chapter in the area of program.
Jenelle Scott, PE, studied piano privately for 12 years with Jeanne Lewis of Missoula, winning the Chopin Award for piano in high school. Scott played flute and various other instruments in the school band for many of these years, participated regularly in ensemble music, and accompanied soloists. Her first foray into church music was playing the flute with the choir. Funded in part through a piano scholarship, Scott received her degree in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University, while studying piano with Laurel Yost and earning a music minor. Scott worked as an accompanist at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Spokane, for several years. In 2009, she decided to tackle Pilgrim Church’s idle organ. With the patient support of her congregation, and study with Arthur Rosenau, she grew into a church organist. In addition to her engagement as a weekend musician, Scott is a licensed Professional Engineer, working in the environmental health and safety field.
Jonathan Truong began his music studies with piano at the age of six, thanks to the encouragement of his parents. He has since enjoyed a number of musical pursuits. Truong served as accompanist and bass singer with the Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus, and performed as a cellist in the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra.
Since moving to Idaho, Truong has held the position of organist at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Post Falls, where he also sings tenor and on occasion directs the chant schola. Last year he was happy to participate in the Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene’s Messiah concert, as a chorus member.
Truong holds the Service Playing Certificate from the American Guild of Organists. In his free time, he enjoys listening to music, drinking tea, messing around on the ukulele, and kendama. All glory be to God!
