Organists
Jim Tevenan, CAGO, is a native of San Francisco, where he served as music director/choirmaster/organist at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Corte Madera and Holy Name of Jesus Parish, San Francisco until his move to the Inland Northwest in 1995 to take up the position of music director/organist at Saint Augustine Parish in Spokane. There he participated in the construction and installation of the Martin Pasi instrument that is part of our program today, and which was the centerpiece of an annual concert series at the church that saw performances by national and international artists such as Christopher Herrick, Craig Cramer, and James David Christie. “Retired” from his position at Saint Augustine, Tevenan is now a substitute organist and classical music host and producer at Spokane Public Radio (KPBX 91.1), hosting both the daily Morning Classical program as well as the regional performance series, Concert of the Week. Jim is professionally certified as “Colleague” of the American Guild of Organists (CAGO).
Janet Ahrend, DMA, holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ from the University of Idaho, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts Degrees in Organ from the University of Washington. She received further training at the Royal School of Church Music in England.
Ahrend has served as guest instructor for the Royal School of Church Music Summer School held in Perth, Western Australia, and is on the faculties of Gonzaga University, Whitworth University, and Eastern Washington University as Adjunct Instructor of Organ. She has served as co-dean of the American Guild of Organists-Spokane Chapter, and is currently chair of the chapter’s Organ Academy, an outreach program for young students. She is a member of the PEO Sisterhood.
From 1990 to 1993, Ahrend served on the hymnal committee for the United Church of Christ, helping to produce the New Century Hymnal. She has spent her life working in churches, serving as organist for Methodist, Congregational, Roman Catholic, and Episcopal congregations. From 1997-2014, she was organist-choirmaster for the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Spokane, where she also directed the handbell choir. She maintains a private piano and organ studio in her home.
Ahrend was ordained pastor of Plymouth Congregational Church in Spokane, Wash., in May, 2019.
Matthew Johnson, BMus, is a 25-year-old organist who is originally from Issaquah, Wash. He began piano lessons at the age of five and, inspired by the beautiful sacred music of Saint James Cathedral in Seattle, Johnson became interested in organ. He began his organ studies with Dr. Clint Kraus and later studied with Mr. Joseph Adam. Johnson also served as the Organ Scholar at Saint James and as a substitute organist at Blessed Sacrament in Seattle.
While growing up, his passion for organ crystallized while attending an organ camp at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan when he was thirteen years old. Since then, Johnson has won numerous awards and scholarships including the Interlochen Center for the Arts Fine Arts Award in Organ, Young Talent Award for the International Organ Festival in Haarlem, Netherlands, Philadelphia Young Artist Organ Institute, as well as medals in piano and organ at Musicfest Northwest in Spokane. This all led Johnson to hold a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance from McGill University in Montréal, Québec, where he studied with Professor Hans-Ola Ericsson, Dr. Jonathan Oldengarm, and Mr. Christian Lane. While in Montreal, Johnson held the Organ Scholar position at Saint Andrew & Saint Paul Presbyterian Church, which boasted one of the best church music programs in Canada. In 2018 and 2019, he was a finalist in the Lynwood-Farnam Organ Competition in Montréal. Starting in August, Johnson begins study at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, with Dr. Jens Korndörfer for a Master of Music in Organ Performance degree. Matthew is incredibly excited to return to music full-time and music school after having been away from both for several years.
Joseph Schubert, PhD, retired from teaching in 2020, with a career that began with two years of teaching third grade, and thirty-six subsequent years of teaching choral music in public schools at the junior high, high school, and university levels. From 2009 through 2023, Dr. Schubert also taught music theory/style analysis, choral literature, and academic research and writing in the “Three-Summer Master of Music in Choral Conducting” program at California State University, Los Angeles. He has maintained a parallel career as church organist and/or music director since 1975 and is currently serving as interim organist at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, Spokane.
